FIONA COGHLAN HAS been named the Irish Times/Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the year for 2013 after captaining the Irish women’s rugby team to an historic first Grand Slam and Six Nations Championship.
The Clontarf native beat off competition from the likes of Mayo footballer Cora Staunton, sailor Annalise Murphy, camogie star Theresa Maher and triathlete Aileen Reid, as well as the seven other monthly winners.

The loosehead prop won the monthly award way back in February after her side recorded their first ever win over England, thrashing the Six Nations favourites 25-0 in Ashbourne.
76-year old former racing driver Rosemary Smith was also a winner on the night after being presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in honour of her role as a pioneer in Irish Sport.
Kieran Mulvey of the Irish Sports Council paid tribute to Smith saying:
“Rosemary was one of the few Irish people of her time to get to the very top of her sport at international level.
“Her achievements are all the more remarkable considering she operated in a male-dominated sport at a time when a woman displaying ambition and individuality was generally frowned upon.”
